Initial Recommendations of the Downtown Fort Lauderdale Civic Association

Task Force on Traffic Congestion and Pedestrian Safety

  • To see more attention given to reducing speed limits through:
  • Periodic placement of speed reader boards and enforcement on Las Olas of speed limits to reinforce the posted speed limit.

Reducing width of Las Olas travel lanes east of Andrews Avenue, through striping and raised median pedestrian islands in the mid block segments, and curb extensions at intersections in order to slow travel speeds and reduce the length of pedestrian crossing distances.

Providing slight raising of crosswalks – less than a speed bump.

  • Consideration given to improved pedestrian safety and circulation through:

Providing more green time for pedestrian crossings on the south leg of the Las Olas/SE 3rd Avenue intersection.
Providing a crosswalk and a green indication in the signal phase for crossings on the south leg at the Las Olas/Andrews Avenue intersection.
Provide a raised median island with landscaping and pathways for pedestrians crossing north to south along all of Las Olas between Andrews Avenue and 6th Avenue.

  • Consideration of additional streetscape enhancements such as:
  • Provide trees which create a better canopy over Las Olas.
  • Improve/maintenance of lighting on Las Olas at SE 3rd and Andrews avenues.
  • To see management/enforcement of valet parking at the Lobster Bar where vehicles are sometimes lined up/queued across Las Olas.
  • To see enforcement of noise codes related to nose produced by motorcycles.
  • To reduce vehicle speeds on N. New River Drive east between the 3rd Avenue Bridge and Las Olas. Some suggestions are to extend the raised median in front of the River House and place lighting or reflectors in the median.

To review and develop solutions for the recurring traffic congestions on SE 3rd Avenue between Las Olas and SE 2nd Street (both northbound and southbound) during the PM peak period.
